US Embassy Clears Air on Reports that Ambassador William Popp Has Apologized to Museveni, Muhoozi

The US Mission in Uganda has spoken out after social media reports claimed that Ambassador William Popp had formally issued an apology to President Yoweri Museveni and first son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

As The Pearl Times reported Last week, Gen Muhoozi, who is also the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and senior presidential advisor on special operations, claimed US Ambassador William Popp had disrespected President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled Uganda for almost 40 years.

Muhoozi also alleged that Ambassador Popp had also undermined the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda. But he did not give details on what really constituted the two ‘charges’ against Washington’s envoy to Kampala.

The controversial Ugandan military chief further even went ahead to demand that US Ambassador William Popp either chooses to apologize to President Museveni or get ready to leave Uganda by 9AM Monday, October 07, 2024.

On October 07, 2024, some on social media claimed that US Ambassador William Popp had formally apologized to President Museveni and Gen Muhoozi.

But the US Mission in Uganda has dismissed the claim, saying it was yet to receive any request for an apology.

“This narrative [that Ambassador William Popp has apologized] is completely false,” the US embassy in Uganda said in a short online statement.

“Neither the U.S. Embassy nor #AmbPopp have received any formal request to apologize from the Ugandan government on any matter, nor has he apologized.”

The US embassy in Uganda also reminded Ugandan that “all official statements are posted on our platforms.” Gen Muhoozi has since deleted his posts warning Ambassador Popp.

But a top US senator has warned Gen Muhoozi after he gave Ambassador Popp an ultimatum to apologize or leave. (See Details Here).
