Lt. Matte Magwara
By Joseph Masereka in Kasese
The Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) in charge of Bukonzo County, Lt Matte Magwara, has faulted local leaders in Kasese for stopping event organizers from holding events on Christmas Day.
Lt Magwara stated that Uganda is not in a state of emergency, and people should be allowed to celebrate Christmas freely.
He emphasized that event organizers, including churches, should work closely with the police to ensure successful and secure events.
The criticism comes after some event organizers were denied permission to hold events on Christmas Day, with local leaders citing security threats. However, Lt Magwara’s comments suggest that decisions to block the events were unnecessary.
Hang out places intending to display fireworks to seek security clearance
In a related development, as the public awaits to usher in the New Year 2025, police in Kasese district have tasked owners of hangout places including bars and hotels intending to have fireworks exhibition to seek for security clearance for permission.
This, according to police, is aimed at ensuring public safety during the New Year’s celebration.
Addressing the media earlier this week at Kasese Division Police Station in Kasese town, the Rwenzori East regional police community liaisons officer (CLO), SP Luka Mbusa, maintained that it was a prerequisite for anyone intending to display fireworks to apply for permission from the relevant authorities.
SP Mbusa warned the public against burning car tyres and other items, which can pose a risk to people and property.
‘’Those who intend to have fireworks and exhibition to seek seek for security clearance for permission,” emphasized SP Mbusa.
“Uganda police force (UPF) has already established guidelines for the display of fireworks during the New Year celebration and the standard safety protocols must be followed.”
