Mengo Magistrate’s Court will on January 27 decide on a petition in which Fred Nyanzi, a brother to National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, is seeking to overturn Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko’s election victory through a vote recount.
Nyanzi, the NUP candidate, lost to Nsereko (independent) in the January 14 parliamentary poll.
Nsereko garnered 16,998 votes, Nyanzi 15,975,National Resistance Movement (NRM)’s Babu Cedric Ndilima polled 10,746 while Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)’s Harold Kaija managed 1,679 votes.
But Nyanzi rushed to court seeking a vote recount.
When he appears before court, Nyanzi is expected to offer evidence that Nsereko’s agents forged declaration of result forms, and that presiding officers threw out his agents, among other allegations.
If the magistrate finds the evidence adduced substantial, an order of recount could be ordered in several polling stations affected by the cited irregularities.
Such polling stations could included Balikudembe Primary School, KCC Primary School, Seroma Parking Yard, All saints, Martin Road, Old Kampala SS, National Theatre, Nakivubo Road, Basajjabala Taxi Park, and Kampala Library, Bombo Road, Summit View, Nakasero 1 and 2, and Hoima Flats.
