Chaos has characterized the second last day of the Democratic Party (DP) delegates conference happening at Asamar Hotel in Ruti in Mbarara City.
Running from May 30 and ending on June 02, the 12th DP National Delegates Conference in Mbarara has been seen escalation of wrangles and disagreement within one of Uganda’s oldest political parties.
Richard Sebamala, a challenger to party president and justice minister Norbert Mao, was thrown out of the race.
Sebamala had paid nomination fees. Some of his allies who had also paid nomination fees were also ejected.
The disqualification of Sebamala, the Bukoto Central MP, led to a scuffle.
It is said that police officers forced Sebamala out of Asamar Hotel after they received orders to do so from Mbarara City South Deputy RCC Robert Kanusu.
With Sebamala out of the race, Mao was left to compete with Michael Lulume Bayiga and Alia Alita for the position of party president general and chairman.
In the same scuffle, Mukono South MP Fred Kayondo, one of Sebamala’s mobilizers, sustained injuries from the beating he got. Sebamala’s supporters rushed Kayondo to hospital.
The Pearl Times can also confirm that Richard Lumu withdrew from the general secretary race, leaving it for incumbent Gerald Siranda and Ismail Kirya.
Earlier, Mao told the delegates that DP had not been sold and that he had no intentions of selling it or putting it in his will so that his children can inherit it.
Mao also took issue that some democrats were badmouthing the party in the press and challenging it in courts of law.
“Fellow Democrats, we have internal mechanisms for solving our party problems. Why do we go to the media to lambast the party? Why do we go to court to lambast the party?… Does this look like a party that was sold?” asked Mao.
“The people who say the party was sold have the biggest posters all over here — that is utter hypocrisy, and we must call it out.
“As I told the Karamoja delegation, DP is unsaleable. DP is not personal property; I will never put it in any Will so that my children can inherit it. DP is too big for anybody.”
It should be remembered that Norbert Mao had also been accused of begging funds from Gen Salim Saleh to hold the delegates conference. Norbert Mao explained his relationship with Gen Salim Saleh, Museveni’s younger brother, as reported Here.
