On the day that first son and Chief of Defence of Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba attacked her for demanding the release of Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s bodyguard Edward Ssebuufu aka Eddie Mutwe, Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) chairperson Mariam Wangadya was recognized for her efforts in defending human rights.
Gen Muhoozi also threatened sanctions against EU officials for meeting Bobi Wine and other top leaders in Uganda’s main opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party.
So, both Wangadya and EU officials found them in one place, the residence of the Swedish Ambassador, at the ceremony for the award of the Human Rights Defender of the year.
The EU Human Rights Defenders Award 2025 went to Praise Aloikin Opoloje, who is associated with Makerere University Human Rights and Peace Centre (HURIPEC) and Chapter Four Uganda.
I hope this award is followed with a deeper commitment on issues on Human Rights in the country. I hope this is a commitment from the EU in Uganda to do even exceedingly more to the struggle against Human Rights Abuse in Uganda,” said Aloikin, who began her speech by saying she hoped EU in Uganda would not revoke her award because of the hard truth she was about to say.
At the same ceremony, Head of European Union delegation in Uganda Jan Sadek handed Wangadya a certificate of appreciation “as a special recognition of her voice, service and dedication in upholding Human Rights for all in Uganda.
“I want to appreciate the EU for this huge honor. I pay tribute to all Members of the Commission and staff of the UHRC for the work we do together, and all stakeholders for their support. This recognition will encourage and strengthen us in our pursuit of freedom, equality and dignity for all people,” said Wangadya.
Earlier in the day, CDF Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba sent what he called his ‘last warning’ to UHRC boss Wangadya over her ‘stup!d letter’ on Eddie Mutwe. Gen Muhoozi also threatened to deport EU officials who met Bobi Wine, warning them against playing with fire. (See Details Here and There).
Meanwhile, the EU has previously had to speak out on allegations of huge amounts of money given to Ugandan activists and human rights defenders to fight Museveni, which claims they have responded to, as reported Here and There.
