The National Bureau for Non-governmental Organisation (NGO Bureau) has suspended a total of 54 organisations.
Some 23 of the affected NGOs were reportedly operating with expired permits contrary to sections 31(1) and 32(1) of the NGO Act of 2016.
A total of 15 organisations had failed to file annual returns and audited books of accounts contrary to sections 39(2) and (3) of the NGO Act of 2016.
The rest (16 in number) were running without registering with the NGO Bureau contrary to sections 29(1), 31(1) and 31(2) of the NGO Act.
The list includes Chapter Four Uganda of human rights lawyer Nicholas Opiyo, CCEDU, GLISS and Femrite.
Announcing the suspension of the operations of these organisations, NGO Bureau executive director Stephen Okello orderee District NGO Monitoring Committees (DNMCs) to submit an inventory of all NGOs and up to date register of all CBOs operating in their districts as of Wednesday, June 30, 2021.
