INCREASE OUR SALARIES OR ELSE… Looming Arts Teachers’ Strike Threatens to Disrupt 2025 Academic Calendar

Government arts teachers have issued an ultimatum within which they expect President Yoweri Museveni’s government to increase their salaries like their science counterparts or else lay down their tools.

Under their umbrella body, the Uganda Professional Humanities Teachers’ Union (UPHTU), the government arts teachers say they want government to use the ultimatum to work on their salary grievances or they will resort to industrial action.

UPHTU leaders have given government 90 days (or three months) within which they expect it to raise their salaries. However, salary increments may not be effected outside budgetary allocations for a given financial year.

The government arts teachers say government should include money for their salary increment in the 2025-2026 financial year.

They say they are not envious of their science teachers but rather want a non-discriminatory salary structure since, like their colleagues who teach science subjects, they have children to pay school fees for on top of other needs. Besides, they further argued, they have the same qualifications.

UPHTU leaders say they will not listen to the argument that the economy is not doing well, adding that the excuse can no longer make sense since their science counterparts had their pay raised in 2022 as the country still suffered tougher Covid19 impact.

The strike, if it happens, could disrupt the 2025 academic calendar.

It should be raised that after having their salaries increased, some science teachers started applying for early retirement so as to get juicy retirement packages, threatening a crisis. But president Yoweri Museveni quickly came out and ordered the science teachers retiring early to forget a juicy retirement package. (See Details Here and There).
