Lukwago to Bobi Wine: Hand over NUP presidency to others and focus on struggle

Kampala lord mayor and People’s Government (PG) deputy president Erias Lukwago has advised Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine to step down from National Unity Platform (NUP) leadership and concentrate on ‘liberation struggle.’

Bobi Wine took over the leadership of NUP months ago, and steered it through an election, consequently making it the main opposition party.

Although his party won at least 60 MP seats, Bobi Wine lost the presidential election to incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni.

Bobi Wine has since pulled his petition from the Supreme Court, taking it to the public court by declaring peaceful protests.

Now, Lukwago says Bobi Wine should learn from veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye who stepped down from Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidency to concentrate on activism and ‘liberation struggle.’

Lukwago is Besigye’s deputy at PG.

According to the lord mayor, Bobi Wine’s hands will several times be tied by party decisions and laws governing political organisations if he keeps NUP’s top job.

Appearing on NBS Barometer Tuesday night, Lukwago noted that while the show was a wrong forum to send the message to Bobi Wine, Bobi Wine ought to take his advice in good faith.

Lukwago also urged Ugandans to unite despite their allegiance to different political parties.

Bobi Wine has previously rejected Besigye’s advice. In April 2019, he castigated the former FDC president for claiming there was no democracy in Uganda.
