Muhoozi Reignites Threats to Hang Besigye to Revenge Against Winnie Byanyima

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has once again ignited political tension after reviving controversial rhetoric on his X (formerly Twitter) account targeting opposition figure Kizza Besigye, and talking of hanging him.

In a series of incendiary posts, Muhoozi repeated past threats suggesting that Besigye could face execution—remarks that have drawn widespread condemnation and renewed fears for the detained opposition leader’s safety.

The remarks echo earlier statements in which Muhoozi openly declared intentions to “hang” Besigye, rhetoric that previously triggered public outrage and calls for sanctions against his social media activity.

MUHOOZI also says he is seeking revenge for what he claims is pain Winnie Byanyima previously inflicted against them as children. He did not divulge details regarding this allegation.

“Besigye thinks he’ll avoid being hanged because of Winnie’s noise. Winnie will learn the pain she inflicted on us as children will be repaid in full!” wrote Muhoozi.

“I think we might hang Besigye by next month. If we don’t hang him, we will shoot him dead. That will be a great day for Uganda.”

For Winnie Byanyima, Besigye’s situation is not just political—it is deeply personal.

Byanyima has warned that her husband’s life is in danger, accusing Uganda’s leadership of creating an environment where such threats could be acted upon. She has openly expressed fear that Muhoozi or security forces could ultimately kill Besigye.

Her statements reflect growing anxiety among opposition supporters and human rights observers, who see the general’s online pronouncements as more than rhetoric.

Muhoozi’s use of X has long been a source of controversy. His posts—often blunt, provocative, and at times threatening—have blurred the line between personal expression and official military posture.

In previous incidents, his account faced suspension or disappearance following backlash over violent statements directed at political opponents.

Muhoozi and Byanyima have previously been engaged in a war of words, including over Winnie’s past love relationship with Museveni that she opened up about and told Muhoozi to go slow. (See Details Here and There).
