President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has said his bush war comrades veteran opposition leader Col (Rtd) Dr Kizza Besigye, and 2021 presidential candidates Maj Gen Gregg Mugisha Muntu and Lt Gen (Rtd) Henry Kakurugu Tumukunde do not have the potential to succeed him.
On December 14, Museveni campaigned in Rukungiri, where Besigye and Tumukunde hail from.
Addressing his ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party leaders in Rukungiri, Museveni said he had weighed Besigye, Muntu and Tumukunde and found them wanting.
He said they had not made enough efforts in transformation of Uganda, and that he always had to push them like wheelbarrows for them to deliver.
Museveni emphasized that these politicians had proven ‘useless’ even when he is still alive and he couldn’t trust them with securing the future of the country.
He insisted Ugandans still loved him and he would go once he finds a suitable successor.
“But if I leave power, you guys who are useless when I am still in power and want me to push you like a wheelbarrow, where will they take Uganda?” wondered Museveni.
“Let me stay since Ugandans still want me. I will go if a useful person comes and I see where to leave Uganda.”
In power since 1986 when he took over power following a five-year bush war, Museveni is seeking to extend his rule to four decades.
