President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has explained why he and first lady Janet are yet to be vaccinated against Covid19, yet other leaders like Paul Kagame of Rwanda have.
Uganda started Covid19 vaccination last week.
But while many expected Museveni and Janet to lead the way, they were no show.
Instead, health minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng presided over the vaccination launch, being the first to take the jab.
When he addressed the nation on March 14, Museveni revealed that some State House staff had contracted Covid19 but he and the first lady had remained safe.
Those infected included staff from the Presidential Press Unit (PPU) and the kitchen.
Museveni thinks he and Janet survived Covid19 because they stay in a spacious place.
He gave reasons why he and the first lady were reluctant to take the jab.
“I haven’t been vaccinated nor has Janet. This is because we wanted to start with people who are at high risk,” said Museveni.
He says he had tasked his medical staff to look at the vaccines and advise him on which one to be vaccinated with — the one of Oxford, of the Russians or Chinese?
“The reason I have not been vaccinated is because I am quite careful and well protected by the system but also, am looking at which of the vaccines I should go for.”
Museveni, once again, promised Uganda’s vaccine will be much “better” than most of the ones on the market, adding that it was designed to handle the virus’ mutation abilities.
