CLOSED! All Ugandan MPs ordered to stay away from Parliament for two weeks

Parliament of Uganda will be closed for two weeks to allow the disinfection process of the Parliamentary buildings to take place after cases were reported among MPs and staff.

A June 22 statement by acting clerk to Parliament Henry Yoweri Waiswa informed all MPs “Parliament of Uganda like the rest of the country has been affected by the second wave of Covid19 pandemic with a positivity rate of 17.1 per cent.”

Waiswa also reminded the legislators Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah had adjourned the House sine die on June 14.

The decision to close parliament buildings for disfenction had been agreed on by Speaker Jacob Oulanyah and the institution’s administration.

“As a mitigating measure in the prevention of the Covid19 infection, the Administration of Parliament on consultations with the Office of the Speaker is closing Parliament to Honorable Members of Parliament for a period of two weeks in order to disinfect the Parliamentary Buildings,” read the statement in part.

“This notice will take effect from Monday, June 28, 2021, to Sunday, July 11, 2021. Members are advised to adhere to this instruction.”
