Russia’s Vladimir Putin Congratulates Museveni on Election Victory to Extend Rule to 45 Years

Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended his congratulations to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on his re-election, highlighting the strong ties between the two nations. In a letter to Museveni, Putin expressed optimism about the future of Russian-Ugandan relations.

Museveni secured victory in the January 15, 2026, general election with 71.6% of the votes, extending his rule to potentially 45 years.

Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, has rejected the poll results, citing widespread irregularities and alleging intimidation by security forces. He’s currently in hiding after a military raid on his home. (Read Bobi Wine’s full interview in his hideout word by word Here).

Presidential candidate Robert Kasibante has challenged Museveni’s victory in the Supreme Court, seeking to nullify the results, as reported Here.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the matter in about a month and a half, with newly appointed Chief Justice Flavian Zeija presiding. (Read Interesting facts about newly appointed Chief Justice Dr Flavian Zeija Here).

Political observers say it is unlikely the court will nullify Museveni’s victory, given the lack of precedent.

But Putin has joined other presidents celebrating Museveni’s win. African leaders like Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and Rwandan President Paul Kagame have also sent their congratulations to the 81-year-old president.

“Dear Mr. Museveni! Please accept sincere congratulations on the occasion of your re-election as the President of the Republic of Uganda,” wrote Putin.

He was also upbeat about maintaining better relations between Uganda and Russia.

“Russian-Ugandan relations have traditionally been of friendly nature. It is my hope that your activities as the head of state will further contribute to the development of mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation in various fields. I wish you success, as well as good health and well-being.”
