Speaker race: MPs reportedly paid Shs20m to Vote candidate chosen by NRM CEC

A number of ruling NRM MPs have reportedly been given Shs20m, each, to vote a candidate chosen by the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) in the 11th Parliament speaker race.

NRM CEC is expected to announce its candidate for speaker race in coming days.

The race is tight between incumbent speaker Rebecca Kadaga who is seeking a third term and her decade-long deputy Jacob Oulanyah.

But there are reports CEC could drop both Kadaga and Oulanyah.

Now, leading tabloid Red Pepper (recently rebranding to Daily Pepper) has alleged that each of the new MPs has pocketed Shs20m to vote for a candidate chosen by CEC.

Although Pearl Times News couldn’t independently verify these claims, reports of MPs being paid to vote for NRM preferred choices are not new.

For example, in 2005, MPs were reportedly paid Shs5m to vote for presidential term limits removal.
