Christopher Okello Onyum: What American Embassy Found on Ggaba Daycare Children Suspected Killer’s Criminal Record and Mental Fitness
New details have emerged in the ongoing trial of Christopher Okello Onyum, the man accused of murdering four toddlers at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre, as investigators presented findings about his background and mental condition.
Appearing before court, Detective Assistant Superintendent of Police James Eserait revealed that inquiries conducted with the United States Embassy in Uganda established that Okello holds a valid American passport. More notably, the embassy indicated that he has no known criminal record in the United States and is considered mentally fit.
The revelations have added a new layer of complexity to a case that has shocked the nation, raising questions about motive and how the suspect allegedly carried out the gruesome acts despite having no prior criminal history or documented mental health concerns.
However, Eserait’s testimony also highlighted a discrepancy in Okello’s local records. According to information obtained from the Ministry of Works and Transport, the suspect does not possess a valid Ugandan driving permit. While seemingly minor, investigators noted that every detail remains critical as they piece together his movements and activities before and after the incident.
The case stems from a horrifying incident in which four toddlers were found dead at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre under circumstances investigators have described as disturbing. The gravity of the killings prompted Yoweri Museveni to order a public trial, emphasizing transparency and public accountability. The proceedings are currently being held at the Ggaba Community Church grounds, where they are being presided over by Alice Komuhangi Khaukha.
The court continues to hear evidence in the high-profile case, which has drawn widespread public attention and prompted calls for tighter regulation of childcare facilities across the country.
Proceedings are expected to continue as prosecutors present more witnesses to build their case against Okello, who has maintained his innocence.
