The UEDCL Managing Director Paul Mwesigwa has been fired and board chairperson Lydia Ochieng Obbo fired, according to energy and mineral development minister Ruth Nankabirwa.
Nankabirwa announced sweeping leadership changes at Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), confirming the dismissal of Board Chairperson Lydia Ochieng and sending Managing Director Paul Mwesigwa on forced leave as part of a broader review of the company’s governance and operations.
“The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development wishes to inform the public and stakeholders that the Government has undertaken review of the Management at the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL),” said Minister Nankabirwa in a statement issued on May 02, 2026.
“In this regard, the services of the Chairperson of the Board have been terminated, and the Managing Director has been placed on forced leave to allow for a comprehensive review of the Company’s management and operations.”
The minister outlined interim leadership arrangements to ensure continuity.
“To ensure continuity of operations and stability in service delivery, the Shareholders have appointed an Interim Board Chairperson. The Board has in turn appointed an Acting Managing Director to oversee the operations of UEDCL during this transition period,” said Nankabirwa.
“These interim arrangements will remain in place until the vacant positions are substantively filled.”
Nankabirwa emphasized that the changes are part of standard governance processes.
“The Ministry emphasizes that these actions are part of routine governance and oversight procedures aimed at strengthening institutional performance, accountability, and service delivery within the energy sector,” she noted.
She reassured the public that “electricity supply and distribution services will continue uninterrupted during this period.”
She further called for patience and cooperation from stakeholders, stating, “The Ministry appreciates the understanding and cooperation of all stakeholders as Government works to strengthen governance and operational effectiveness at UEDCL.”
It should be remembered that UEDCL took over from UMEME in a buyout deal that raised eyebrows because of the money that taxpayers would pay to UMEME to leave, as reported Here and There.
Meanwhile, you can read about government that will scrapped or merging starting July 2026 — which include UEDCL — as detailed HERE.
