The debris at a collapsed Makindye building
Rescue efforts are ongoing at Kelezia and Kifampa Zones in Kampala’s Makindye Division following the collapse of a building that was under construction.
The accident happened at about 9pm of September 11 night, and many are still believed to be trapped in the debris over 12 hours since the collapse took place.
Those trapped are said to be construction workers who were sleeping in one of the rooms.
They had reportedly gathered for their supper when the unfortunate incident happened.
So far, police has confirmed the rescue of one person.
Locals have joined Fire and Rescue Services and Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) in the rescue efforts that went into early morning.
Community members used axes, hoes and hammers to dig through the debris of what was hitherto a four-storeyed building under construction.
Others used their phone torches to guide those undertaking rescue efforts by digging through the debris.
Meanwhile, police has arrested Joseph Balikuddembe, a KCCA engineering supervisor for Makindye Division, over the collapse of the building.
The building had no approved plan, said Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago who visited the scene on September 12.
