President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has appointed Mariam Wangadya new substantive Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC).
Wangadya, hitherto the deputy Inspector General of Government (D-IGG), replaces Meddie Ssozi Kaggwa who died in 2019.
For over two years Amooti Katebalirwe wa Irumba has served as acting chairperson but lacked the powers to execute the roles of a susbtantive chairperson.
Now, after numerous cries from the human rights fraternity, Museveni has picked Wangadya to take up the role.
“By the Powers given to me under Article 51(1) and (2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, I hereby, appoint Ms. Mariam Wangadya as Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission,” announced Museveni.
