Eight people, including three women and five men, have been remanded to prison over police officer Chemonges killing.
Police Constable Suleiman Chemonges was killed by a mob at a funeral in Ibanda. Chemonges had gone for duty at the funeral of a former remandee.
The ex-prisoner, Lazarus Kahangire, had died in prison, and locals accused police and prisons of being behind his death.
Eight of these appeared before Grade One Magistrate’s Court in Ibanda on April 15, 2025. These were charged over Chemonges’ murder.
Presiding magistrate Edith Tusabe remanded the eight to Nyabuhikye Government Prison until April 29, 2025.
Those remanded included Gaston Muhwezi, aged 27; Sam Mwesigye Kikuringwa, 53 years old, Alfred Arinaitwe Mabele 43 years aold, Christine Atuhaire, 37 years old, and Allen Niwatuha, 23 years old.
On April 14, Uganda Police Force (UPF) Chief Political Commissar AIGP Ubaldo Bamunoba was in Ibanda to address community tensions following the murder of PC Chemonges.
AIGP Bamunoba held a meeting with the Ibanda district security committee, the district leadership and police officers to discuss the incident and identify areas for improvement in police-community relations.
Together with district leaders, Bamunoba also visited the scene of the incident in Bisheshe ,Muziza Central Ward Kyembogo LC 1 to assess the situation and gather insights.
“The community has been mobilized for a sensitization program aimed at reducing fear and promoting peace. The program focused on the effects of mob justice and the importance of community policing,” Bamunoba said after the meeting.
“We have strengthened the community policing approach in Ibanda to restore trust and ensure public safety as part of a broader initiative to improve police-community relations and address security concerns in the district.”
