Rajiv Ruparelia, son to tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia and his wife Jyotsna Ruparelia, was cremated at the Hindu Crematorium at Lugogo in the Ugandan capital Kampala.
Rajiv Ruparelia, the only son to Sudhir Ruparelia, died in a road accident at the Busabala flyover when his car overturned and burst into flames.
Family members, friends, business people and government officials attended the cremation ceremony and other funeral rites to bid farewell to the 35-year-old businessman, sportsman and philanthropist.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among represented President Museveni at the funeral ceremony held the Ruparelia family home in Kololo.
She delivered Museveni’s tributes to Rajiv as one who had made significant contributions to the development of Uganda through his several investments across the country.
Speaker Among described Rajiv Ruparelia as a young who had left lessons for many to emulate.
“The large turnout and expressions of grief demonstrate that, despite his life being tragically cut short, Rajiv lived fully and left a lasting legacy for many to follow,” said Among.
“Through his numerous contributions to support the education of disadvantaged individuals, his charitable donations, and his support for the sports sector, Rajiv expanded his impact beyond the business world; he was truly a remarkable individual.
“We pray that God Almighty comforts the bereaved family and grants Rajiv’s soul eternal rest.”
Hindu priests led prayers following Hindu rituals for funeral ceremonies.
It was a time of grief, and, sometimes Sudhir Ruparelia and Jyotsna Ruparelia as well as other close family members and friends broke down under the heavy weight of grief.
Sudhir Ruparelia and Jyotsna Ruparelia paid glowing tribute to their deceased son and recalled the memories they shared with him while he lived.
They talked of his childhood, his racing, and his philanthropy, among other things.
Sudhir Ruparelia said that as a father, he would “carry the unimaginable pain of loss and immense pride of having raised a son like Rajiv.”
He added that he “will always remember most is his vibrant energy: energy that could fill a room, light up a gathering, and spark inspiration in everyone he met.”
Sudhir also talked of an “enormous heart” that “truly defined” Rajiv, recalling his passion for helping underprivileged children, some of whom he “quietly” helped to pursue their education from primary up to university level.
Sudhir shared the memories travelling with Rajiv and their fishing expeditions on Lake Victoria.
He also talked of how Rajiv, then aged about five, would carry his small briefcase in which he stuffed chocolates and come into serious business meetings.
To Sudhir, such moments that he spent with Rajiv would remain “the most precious memories I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”
