Mbarara City mayor Robert Kakyebezi Mugabe has intensified his attacks against one of his potential 2026 opponents, Igara West MP Gaffa Mbwatekamwa.
In media appearances and public events, Kakyebezi has made it clear he is not afraid of his opponents.
He has also confirmed that he will run for reelection despite criticism from his opponents regarding service delivery in the city.
Kakyebezi has particularly attacked Mbwatekamwa, who weeks ago announced he would seek election as Mbarara City mayor next year.
In his recent declaration, Mbwatekamwa told Mayor Kakyebezi to peacefully hand over office keys and files to him, saying he is very confident he will render him politically jobless next year.
In response, while he spoke at a burial, Kakyebezi said Mbarara City deserves a better leader not the one he termed as a ‘mutembeyi’ (political hawker).
“Tell him he has started what he won’t finish,” Kakyebezi told Mbwatekamwa, sending his message through mourners.
“There is no way you can replace a cow with a dog.”
Mbwatekamwa is loosely translated as ‘a dog cannot be milked.’
Kakyebezi asked mourners if Mbwatekamwa has ever done anything for the people of Igara West, to which they responded that he had only appeared with vehicles that he claimed were ambulances only for him to disappear like the Bachwezi after being elected.
Kakyebezi said that Mbwatekamwa would be beaten in the election like a chicken thief.
He also sought to portray the Igara West MP and former Kasambya legislator as one who would not be trusted.
Kakyebezi even predicted that it would not be long before Mbwatekamwa buys land in Nyendo and seeks to run in the Masaka mayoral race.
In political shows on Mbarara stations in recent days, Kakyebezi has sought to appear confident that he will defeat his opponents, threatening to eat them like samosa.
But as The Pearl Times has previously reported, some powerful and well connected MPs (from Museveni’s NRM party) as well as several MPs from western Uganda are said to have agreed to support and fund Mbwatekamwa’s campaigns to enable him defeat Kakyebezi. (See Details Here ).
