Dr Chris Baryomunsi and Ofwono Opondo
Two Ugandan government spokespersons are offering two different views on the controversial X posts by first son and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba. While information ministers says Muhoozi X posts should be ignored government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo suggests the powers that be should rein in Muhoozi to behave.
As The Pearl Times has reported, Minister Baryomunsi has told Ugandans and the world not to lose sleep over Gen Muhoozi X posts, saying they are just casual comments made on a private social media account. (See Details and watch video Here).
But Ofwono Opondo, who is also the Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, observed that Muhoozi’s X handle description clearly states that it is the “Official Twitter account of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces (UPDF) and SPA/SO [Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations].”
And that even when he was yet to find time to discuss the matter with Minister Baryomunsi, “you cannot say we treat it casually.”Even before that discussion happens, Ofwono Opondo says he “disagree[s] with my minister.”
In his view, what Gen Muhoozi does is unacceptable, and the first son should simply change his brothers and stop putting government officials in a difficult situation of having to defend him and his controversial statements.
“Nowhere in the world have we seen the CDF, Inspector General of Police, or Chief of Intelligence Services doing this sort of thing. It is a cause for concern. I hope my young brother, the CDF, is listening and taking this seriously—that he needs to step back on his methods of communication,” Ofwono Opondo told Capital Gang.
“Because not everyone will state this publicly, but they are concerned, and that’s why you see them dodging, because he is putting them in a difficult situation. It’s a difficult situation, yes, but it needs to be confronted.”
It should be remembered that Sudan’s government has demanded an apology from Museveni’s government over Muhoozi X posts, while FDC boss Patrick Amuriat has accused the army chiefs of reportedly targeting generals from Teso, sparking a tribalism talk. (See Details Here and There).
Besides threatening to arrest Lt Gen Peter Elwelu, an advisor to his father Yoweri Museveni, Gen Muhoozi also said he wants his mother to succeed his father and become Uganda’s first female president. (See Details Here and There).
